<p>Red Oak is the most widely used hardwood in North America — and for good reason. Its open, porous grain accepts stain beautifully, and its reddish-pink heartwood gives furniture and cabinetry a warm, classic look. Straight-grained and consistent, it's easy to work with hand and machine tools. Quartersawn Red Oak produces a distinctive ray fleck pattern that's highly decorative. Not suitable for outdoor use due to its open pores.</p><table><tr><td><strong>Latin name</strong></td><td>Quercus rubra</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Janka hardness</strong></td><td>1,290 lbf</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Origin</strong></td><td>Eastern North America</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Avg. dried weight</strong></td><td>44 lbs / ft³</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Workability</strong></td><td>Good</td></tr></table><p><strong>Common uses:</strong> Furniture · Flooring · Cabinets · Millwork · Staircases · Veneer</p>
